Airtel launches $1.62 add-on data plan, offers 15GB data

Indian operator Airtel has introduced a data add-on for its prepay customers by offering 15GB for mobile internet traffic for $1.62, The Economic Times reports. There are no call or SMS included in this tariff plan.

The add-on includes a 30-day bonus subscription to one of the three channels on the Airtel Xstream mobile app. Airtel prepay users can opt for the ErosNow, Hoichoi or the ManoramaMax channel.

The plan does not come with any standalone validity and uses the validity of the base plan which will be active on subscriber’s account. Along with the data, this pack also gives a 30-day subscription to one of the three channels on Airtel Xstream mobile app. Airtel users can get access to this plan through the Airtel Thanks app or any third-party recharge portal.

Airtel has also started the process of tariff hikes last month by increasing base tariffs of plans from $6.7 to $1.07. These tariffs are now likely to see a further increase in price.

The base plans might be further increased to $1.34, according to company chairman Mr. Sunil Mittal.

“It is not clear as to when the company would increase tariffs and that it would depend on market force,” he added.

Users will get access to Airtel XStream content and will get to choose between ErosNow (Hindi), ManoramaMax (Malayalam) and Hoichoi (Bengali) OTT channels 30 days subscription within the Airtel Xstream app on Android or iOS mobile devices. Subscribers will have to update their Airtel Xstream app to the latest version to avail of this offer. The development was first noted by Only tech.

Meanwhile, Jio has discontinued two of JioPhone’s cheapest entry-level prepaid plans. The development comes a day ahead of Google-backed smartphone JioPhone’s launch.

These plans were only introduced in Mid-May, with Jio offering its users a Buy One Get One offer with these plans. The telco has now discontinued the buy-1 get-1 offer as well which gave users double the benefits of a plan at the same price. It is possible that Jio could roll out new plans after the launch of JioPhone Next which is slated for tomorrow.
