CMC Networks, one of the largest Pan African networks and Middle Eastern carriers, has announced that it now offers direct access to the Microsoft Azure Peering Service, further increasing access to its broad range of cloud services. Clients will now benefit from a low latency and SLA-backed, direct connection to Microsoft across the network spanning 110 Points of Presence (PoPs) in 78 countries. CMC Networks is the third African partner for Azure Peering service.

Microsoft Azure Peering Service is a partnership programme with key service providers to provide best-in-class public Internet connectivity to their enterprise users. Partner ISPs, who are part of the programme will have direct, highly available, geo-redundant connections and optimised routing to Microsoft. It aims to improve Software as a Service (SaaS) services for enterprises looking for an internet-first network strategy for services such as Microsoft 365 and other SaaS services on Azure.

Nico Walters, Global Innovation and Information Manager, CMC Networks, says that Microsoft Azure Peering Services provides a low-latency, high performance option and is an ideal internet solution for those organisations seeking additional connectivity options beyond Azure ExpressRoute: “As digital transformation fast becomes a priority, digital onboarding is often the gateway bottleneck for clients, which is why we are pleased to offer yet another connectivity option. Using a peering service greatly assists in streamlining cloud transitions and in delivering reliable and performance-centric public connectivity to the Microsoft cloud.”

As a networking service, the solution enhances customer connectivity to Microsoft cloud services, SaaS services, or any Microsoft services accessible via the public internet.

Walters says that CMC is the most densely connected African-focused providers servicing 51 of the 54 countries on the continent and the addition of Microsoft Azure Peering Services ensures that clients have access to Microsoft SaaS services that is prioritised, optimised and highly redundant.

Ends.

Telia Carrier Embraces Coherent Pluggables using Acacia’s OpenZR+ Modules and Cisco Routers

Telia

Telia Carrier announced today that it is preparing to converge their IP and optical networking layers to simplify their networks. Using Acacia’s 400G coherent modules that are plugged directly into Cisco routers, this architecture will enable Telia Carrier to address increasing bandwidth demand while significantly reducing both capital and operational expenditures.

Historically, scaling and operating a multi-layer architecture has always been a challenge. Thanks to game-changing innovations that span across silicon, optics, and routing systems, complex layers can finally converge into a simpler and more scalable architecture – Routed Optical Networking.

In preparation for this new solution, Telia Carrier has already deployed open line systems and terminal equipment that can support new 400G pluggable technology. As an early adopter of this architecture, Telia Carrier is one of the first network operators to perform full end-to-end validation of the solution. Leveraging Acacia’s 400G QSFP-DD coherent modules with OIF 400ZR and OpenZR+ operating modes, the solution can support data rates from 100G to 400G depending on the desired reach. The modules also support client n x 100GbE multiplexing functionality as well as 400GE transport.

“Conventional architectures and technologies built on decades of accumulated complexity and yesterday’s truths fall short in helping us keep up with customer demands for more, consistent bandwidth and a high-quality experience. Starting in the metro, standardized coherent pluggable modules are the next natural step in evolving cost structures, efficiency and scaling capabilities. This follows our global deployments of open optical line-systems and bandwidth-optimized switch-router silicon already powering thousands of 400GE capable ports in the network,” said Staffan Göjeryd, CEO at Telia Carrier

“Pluggable 400G coherent optical transceiver modules are important to enable service providers such as Telia Carrier to migrate to a more converged network architecture capable of enabling OpEx and CapEx savings, as well as a pay as you grow business model,” said Fenghai Liu, Vice President of Product Line Management at Acacia Communications. “Coherent pluggables, like Acacia’s 400G coherent module, have been designed to provide a scalable and cost-effective way to meet increasing bandwidth demands.”

“Adding support for pluggable 400G optics directly into mass-scale routing platforms allows operators to converge historically complex infrastructure into a simple, single layered architecture. The benefits – easier to maintain, faster to adapt, and cheaper to operate – are so compelling that we expect communication service providers to aggressively transition existing metro and long-haul networks to a Routed Optical Networking solution. This architecture can cost-effectively handle the projected traffic growth for the coming years while preparing to support the next transition to 800G or beyond,“ said Kevin Wollenweber, VP/GM Mass-scale Infrastructure Routing and Automation at Cisco.

eSIM Monty Mobile

Tell us more about Monty Mobile’s GSMA-accredited consumer eSIM RSP platform?

Monty Mobile instant connectivity platform provides over-the-air capabilities to manage subscriptions on consumer devices that are eSIM supported. It is an essential platform to digitalize the end-user journey.

There are a growing number of providers; 200 MNOs have already adopted the eSIM technology while almost all new devices have eSIM support. It has been predicted that by 2025, one-third of smartphone connections will use eSIM globally. Now is the time for all MNOs to support the technology as it comes with a wealth of benefits for end users and for mobile operators.

What are the benefits for end users and MNOs?

The major feature of this technology is that it allows the end user to have several profiles on the same device. The owner of the device essentially manages all subscriptions and is at the center of the experience.

I believe this is a big opportunity for MNOs to connect many more devices (wearables, laptops, tablets and smartphones) and to develop and diversify new service offerings.

Tell us more about the latest commercial plan at Monty Mobile?

Monty Mobile is offering a one-year free trial period for all mobile operators. The reason for this approach is to encourage the MNOs to adopt the eSIM technology by providing them the flexibility to test the product for a whole year with no contractual obligations and zero investment cost.

What will happen to the eSIM of end users if the MNO decides to terminate the contract after a year?

Actually, nothing will be affected, the downloaded profiles will still be active and manageable by the device LPA. Once the profile resides in the eUICC, it will become functional by the device’s LPA unless the user decides to delete the profile.

Ontix

Mobile customers of US-based operator AT&T (NYSE:T) are now able to seamlessly connect in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square, with the launch of a new ultra-fast Passpoint Wi-Fi network from next-generation wireless infrastructure-as-a-service provider Ontix.

Launched in early 2020, the Ontix Wi-Fi service is the first in Central London to offer Passpoint™ connectivity, which is provided by GlobalReach Technology. A solution to mobile connectivity and capacity challenges in dense, inner-city areas, AT&T is pioneering the use of the service to provide automatic roaming through SIM authentication for its mobile customers.

Using this innovative networking standard, overseas AT&T subscribers auto-attach to the Wi-Fi network using the operator’s Passpoint profile which has been installed onto their devices. The profile takes care of seamless user onboarding both onto the Wi-Fi roaming service and the Wi-Fi network and provides the benefit of free VoIP calls.

Installed on lampposts and street furniture assets with high-speed wireless backhaul, the outdoor Ontix Wi-Fi service has been successfully running alongside Ontix’s existing small cell wireless network since January, and is a key validation of Ontix’s hybrid Metrohaul architecture for both Wi-Fi and small cell backhaul in dense urban areas. The high-performance Wi-Fi service is fully available to the public and is set to be extended across Westminster during Q1 2021 under Ontix’s exclusive 10-year concession agreement with Westminster City Council, boosting connectivity in high-footfall retail areas.
