PS5 sales reaches 10 million units, as Sony reaches milestone

Sony

Almost nine months after its launch, and the PlayStation 5 has become Sony’s fastest-selling console in the company’s history.

The PS5 has officially surpassed its PS4 predecessor, as more than 10 million PS5 have already been sold. Back in April, Sony revealed that the PS5 sold 7.8 million units, which means it racked up more than 2 million in sales since then.

Even though the Japanese multinational entertainment business is grappling with an issue of global chip shortage, the PS5 has reached “more households faster than any of our previous consoles,” according to Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

As demand for the PS5 continues to outstrip its supply, Sony will have to deal with a lot of work to ensure sales aren’t held back.

“I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE,” Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview.

The PlayStation chief noted that it was still too early to disclose which market is the hottest for the PS5 given the global demand. However, Ryan did express that he was pleasantly surprised by the Chinese market, as Sony sold out its PS5 stock in China “very, very quickly.”

It’s worth noting that the PS5 experience has been enhance by the availability of exclusive games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has sold more than 6.5 million copies.

However, Sony doesn’t have an easy road ahead. The popular games available with the PS5 are usually enhanced versions that can be found with the PS4. Even upcoming bestsellers like Horizon Forbidden West will have PS4 releases.

Although demand for the PS5 is on an all-time high, Sony needs to up its game when it comes to adding incentive for consumers to push them to cash in for the upgrade.
