Walmart is on the lookout for a cryptocurrency expert

Walmart

Walmart is officially joining the cryptocurrency bandwagon. The popular American retailer posted on the company’s job listing a new position for a senior director to develop digital currency products, with the potential of including cryptocurrency payments.

If you’re still warming up to the idea of cryptocurrency disrupting our traditional means of finance, then you might be moving on a slower pace as an increasing number of Fortune 500 companies are beginning to work with the digital currencies.

Walmart’s move comes after Amazon, its biggest rival, expressed interest in hiring a professional to lead and manage their cryptocurrency products.

CNBC reached out to an Amazon spokesperson at the time to understand the factor behind their interest in bringing on a “digital currency and blockchain product lead” to join their payments team.

“We’re inspired by the innovation happening in the cryptocurrency space and are exploring what this could look like on Amazon,” the Amazon spokesperson said. “We believe the future will be built on new technologies that enable modern, fast, and inexpensive payments, and hope to bring that future to Amazon customers as soon as possible.”

Walmart crypto expansion is motivated by similar reasons.

Based in Walmart’s Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters, the new senior position will serve as the company’s “Cryptocurrency and Digital Currency Product Lead,” in charge of “developing the digital currency strategy and product roadmap.”

The listing also emphasizes that the role will focus on “identifying crypto related investment and partnerships,” which may be a hint that Walmart will also invest in today’s cryptocurrency businesses.

It’s no surprise that the job market has expanded to welcome cryptocurrency professionals.

According to a recent report conducted by the Hiring Lab, an international team of economists that promote global market conversation, postings for cryptocurrency jobs saw an increase of 118 percent compared to last year.

Sensing crypto’s undeniable influence, Walmart is looking for a “visionary leader” with almost 10 years of experience to put into action its blockchain strategy.

So, if you think you got what it takes, this could be your next big break.
